Why Pentecost? Why Pentecost?
Go back in our imagination to that time in the Upper Room of the large city where several million people had gathered. Pentecost was a national holiday or festival. Jews from every nation under the sun were in Jerusalem. Why was it necessary for a Pentecost to happen before the disciples could begin their ministry?
Pentecost provides a visual (fire). Many times we must see to believe. Then there was an auditory force (wind). Another impression of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost provides us with graphic symbols of the Spirit. That spirit helped our poor mortal minds comprehend just a bit more of the incomprehensible. Pentecost provided confidence for the early Christians. Remember after the death of Jesus, Peter had indicated he would return to his profession of fishing. Some of the others felt the same way.
With the expression of Pentecost all knew Jesus had kept his
promise.
They were not alone. They saw evidence of his divine presence.
They knew they could build the church even though they did not have all the
details of the blueprint. With the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Heavenly Dove,
we have evidence that Christ was and is alive. That Holy Spirit empowers us to
witness for Jesus. Why Pentecost? Why Pentecost? To empower Christians to move
ahead for Christ.
